Broadlawns Medical Center

Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) is a public hospital located on the north side of Des Moines, Iowa and serves the health care needs of the uninsured and underinsured. BMC has over 1,500 employees and a patient population that speaks over 200 languages daily.

Training and Education

One of BMC’s training and education initiatives is the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Registered Apprenticeship, TEACH/TECH (Training and Educating Adults for a Career in Healthcare). Program recruitment includes adults and high school juniors and seniors with barriers to employment, with a focus on individuals residing in the community surrounding the safety net hospital. Program participants complete job shadowing for career exploration, professional development courses, and earn the DMACC Basic and Advanced CNA certifications including six college credits. 100% of program graduates are offered Health Care Technician employment.
BMC TEACH/TECH has brought more than 150 individuals into a healthcare career. There are many success stories that highlight the diversity of the program including two graduates of color currently enrolled in pre-medicine programs and another who recently received their white coat. BMC partners with Urban Dreams and The Evelyn K. Davis Center to offer skill development and financial literacy courses. Central Iowa Health Works and Iowa Workforce Development are also integral in ensuring participants have the necessary support during and after program completion.
